"And while you are at it, imagine a beautifully cut half-zip training top that is velvety, has no uncomfortable side seams and is quick drying, breathable, moisture wicking and has a natural odor inhibiting fabric technology."
Imagine a sports bra so soft and so supportive that you are absolutely comfortable running, trampolining, even doing a headstand. And while you are at it, imagine a beautifully cut half-zip training top that is velvety, has no uncomfortable side seams and is quick drying, breathable, moisture wicking and has a natural odor inhibiting fabric technology.
If all that isn’t enough, imagine delicate, soft strong and exceptionally comfortable bamboo panties and matching bras with the tiniest spaghetti straps imaginable that really adjust and really hold.
All these brilliant concepts come from lucy activewear, an eight-year-old Portland, OR-based athletic apparel company offering fashion-forward workout wear for women. The company has grown from its origins as lucy.com, an online retailer, to a vertical retailer currently operating over 60 stores nationwide. The company makes everything from maternity garments to marathon designs, yoga and Pilates cloths, conventional underwear, etc., etc.
Catherine King, senior apparel designer for lucy, formerly designed Jantzen and Nike swimwear. She said she wanted to work with the company because of the real concern for women and the company philosophy. "We approach the active woman like a girlfriend," she said. "We don’t talk down to her; we share the wealth of our knowledge with her and we listen. We get feedback online and our managers tell us about customer comments and concerns from the stores – we are totally open to customer comments."
King said when lucy developed the seamless garment the company went through a series of fittings on live models and had a number of women with different shapes try them on in workouts. And the lucy Website has more measurements than your tailor so women can get just the right fit if they order anything from pants to underwear.
Producing a top without side seams called in the seamless knitting technique used on hosiery, where knits are made on a tube.
And the sports bra, now one of the most beloved items in my wardrobe, was created with ribbing for support and little gathers along the side seam. I wear a 34D and the Medium bra not only fit but supported me as firmly as an underwire and far more comfortably.
"At lucy there are a lot of women working, most of them quite active, and we talk about what we want in a product," King said. "We want technological innovations to mean something to the customer, to know our clothing is true "performance" activewear – meaning we consider every aspect of the design of the garment – from the fabric, to the fit, to the way it is sewn together (even the type of thread we use) – to make sure our garments perform in the way they are intended… and of course to make the customer feel great and look great while wearing our garments!
The new lightweight Marathon Seamless Half Zip is $85, the Sterling Seamless Sports Bra is $38; the seamless bamboo bra is $24 and the seamless bamboo boy shorts $18.
